A DM that says "this is so needed" or "how do I get started" feels like progress. For a lot of health and wellness coaches, it's treated as a win in itself, a little dopamine hit from the notification bell. But a DM isn't a client. It's an opening, and openings close fast if nothing structured happens next.
Most coaches respond to interested DMs the same way they'd respond to a friend: warmly, conversationally, no real direction. That's the gap. A DM conversation without a next step almost always fades out, not because the person lost interest, but because nobody gave them somewhere specific to go.
Why "thanks for reaching out!" isn't enough
A friendly reply keeps the conversation alive for one more message. It doesn't move anyone closer to booking. The DMs that actually convert follow a simple shape: acknowledge what they said, ask one specific question back, then give a clear, low-friction next step, almost always a link to book a call.
The three-message structure that works
You don't need a script that reads like a sales page. You need a pattern you can repeat without thinking:
- Message one: Acknowledge specifically what they said, not a generic "thanks so much!"
- Message two: Ask one calibrated question that surfaces their actual situation, not "what are your goals?"
- Message three: Offer the call directly, with a link, not "let me know if you want to chat sometime."
Three messages, one clear direction. Most coaches either stop at message one, or try to build rapport for ten messages before ever mentioning a call.
The link matters more than the wording
Even with a perfect message, if the "next step" is "just message me your availability," you've handed the lead a task. A direct booking link removes the back-and-forth entirely. This is the same principle behind why your booking page itself matters, friction anywhere in the chain loses people who were already interested.
What happens after the DM matters just as much
If someone clicks your link but doesn't book, that's not the end of the conversation, it's the start of a different one. This is where most coaches quietly lose leads they already had, because nothing catches someone who clicked but didn't follow through. That's a nurture problem, not a DM problem, and it needs its own system.
Before you even get to the DM, it helps to know which channels are actually sending you people worth replying to, see where your leads are actually coming from. And if the lead magnet that started the conversation isn't pulling its weight, this is usually why.
